From the vantage point of old age, Eddie looks back on a pivotal moment in his young life and wonders if this triumph of his youth was not the most significant triumph of his life, as “echoes of cheers ride the breeze and disappear.”  Like Nick, he wants to preserve his youth, but “the scent of wine grapes on the autumn air” serves as a metaphor for his youth beginning to dissipate as he grows older and . . . life has already “wrestled the history from the summer games, turned his life to a quest for goals and aims.”
